Established by Queen Margrethe II, this medal was originally conferred to recognize individuals who have rendered commendable services while deployed outside of Denmark, beginning in 2010 this medal can now be awarded to recognize civil and military Armed Forces personnel, as well as foreigners, who have contributed beneficial services to the Danish Defence Force.

The obverse of this medal consists of nine hearts of the Danish Coat of Arms and three crowned lions. The reverse of this medal consists of the year, and place of battle that the recipient is being recognized for.

Beginning in 2002, this medal may be awarded with a silver oak leaf clasp when awarded for the second time, and may be awarded with a gold oak leaf clasp when awarded for a third time.
