History

Established by Queen Margrethe II, this medal was awarded to recognize military personnel who have rendered outstanding services outside of the Danish war zone boarders, to the Danish Armed Forces.

Individuals who are military and civil personnel, and have made a remarkable contribution may receive the gold medal with oak leaves.

The reverse of each medal is inscribed with the date and place of battle that the individual is being recognized for.

Both men and women were eligible to receive the Defence Medal. When awarded to a woman, it was conferred on a bow ribbon.

This medal was discontinued in 2010 and replaced with seven new medals, the Defence Minister Medal, Defence Medal for Bravery, Defence Medal for International Service, Defence Medal for Meritorious Efforts, Defence Medal for Excellent Service, Defence Medal for Fallen Service and Defence Medal for Meritorious Efforts.
