History
Established by King Christian VII, as the first general medal of merit, this medal was awarded to recognize commendable work in society, such as in the field of commerce and life saving, and, individuals such as, artists, Naval Officers, scientists and ship wrights.
This medal was not intended to be worn. It was only awarded with permission to be worn five times. The Gold Medal twice, and the Silver Medal three times.
The rim of the medal was engraved with the recipients name.
This medal lost it's value and use when other medals such as, The Medal for Saving Life From Drowning, The Medal of Merit, and The Medal of Noble Deeds, were instituted. It essentially became obsolete during the reign of King Frederik VI.
