History

Established by the Danish Red Cross, this medal was instituted in replacement of the Danish Red Cross Medal. The Red Cross Decoration of Merit was awarded for the same reasons as the Danish Red Cross medal; conferred upon individuals who rendered extraordinary and meritorious service to Danish Red Cross activities, usually for prolonged periods of time.

Foreigners, men, and women were eligible to receive this award.

The II Class Cross may be awarded with clasps on the ribbon that read "ZAIRE", or "CONGO", for services rendered there. The addition of clasps may affect the price of the medal.
