The Civil Guard Medal of Merit decorations were instituted on April 25, 1934.

The Finnish Name of the Medal is "Suojeluskunnan ansiomitali".

The face of the circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension shows an ‘S’ of the Suojeluskunta with three spruce branches.

The reverse with a gauntleted arm holding a sword from the Finnish coat of arms circumscribed inscription "FÖRSKYDSKARSARBETE SUOJELUSKUNTATYOSTÄ", Finnish and Swedish for "National Guard Work".
