The award was created in 1940 for those engaged in the fighting in the Taipale sector during the Winter War against invading Soviet forces.

The Finnish name of the cross is "Taipaleen risti".

On the face is a central laurel wreath ans is crossed by a sword.
The reverse inscribed "TAIPALE" centrally and the dates "1939" above and "1940" below.
