The Type II Medal was instituted on August 2, 1940 and awarded to those who served during the Winter War campaign against the Soviet Union.
The Finnish Name of the Medal is "Talvisodan muistomitali".
The ribbon of Medals awarded to Military Branch recipients may feature clasps reading, "ILMAPUOLUSTUS" (Air Force), "KENTTĂ„ARMEIJA" (Army), "KOTIJOUKOT" (Coastal Guard), "RANNIKKOPUOLUSTUS" (Home Guard).
The ribbon of Medals awarded to recipients who was at the front area may feature clasps reading, "KAINUU", "KARJALA", "KARJALAN KANNAS", "KOIVISTO", "LAPPI", "MANTSINSAARI", "POHJOIS-KARJALA", "SUMMA", "SUOMUSSALMI", "TAIPALE LAATOKAN", "TOLVAJĂ„RVI".
The ribbon may also be decorated with crossed swords.
