The Order was established by Baron Mannerheim as an award to recognize foreign and Finnish military personnel and civilians for outstanding service to Finland.

The Type I awards with swords feature the swords on the suspension ring.

The II Class Commander Cross is identical to the I Class Commander Cross, but it is awarded without a Breast Star.
