History

The Commemorative Medal for the War of 1939-1945 was created on May 21, 1946.

It was awarded to personnel of the French Army, Navy, and Air Army for service against the Axis countries during WWII. It was also awarded to civilians who fought against the Axis countries, and to foreigners who fought alongside French Forces.

The Medal was worn with any combination of the following official nickel silver clasps: “FRANCE,” “NORVÈGE” (Norway), “AFRIQUE” (Africa), “LIBERATION,” “ALLEMAGNE” (Germany), “EXTRÊME-ORIENT” (Far East), “GRANDE-BRETAGNE” (Great Britain), “U.R.S.S.” (USSR), “ATLANTIQUE” (Atlantic), “MANCHE” (English Channel), “MER DU NORD” (North Sea), “MÉDITERRANÉE” (Mediterranean). The “DÉFENSE PASSIVE” (Passive Defense) clasp was worn by those who helped fight fires, build shelter, and save lives during bombardments. The “ENGAGÉ VOLONTAIRE” (Volunteer) clasp was worn by volunteer combatants. There was an “ITALIE” (Italy) clasp, but this was suppressed with the creation of the Commemorative Medal for the Italy Campaign in 1953. The following clasps were awarded for services rendered outside of those campaigns listed above: “1939,” “1940,” “1941,” “1942,” “1943,” “1944,” “1945.” Some medals may appear with additional unofficial clasps.

There may be additional versions of the Medal that vary in size, composition, and suspension.

It is uncertain when the Medal ceased to be awarded.
