History

The Indochina Merit Cross was awarded by the Governor-General of Indochina to native citizens for exceptional services rendered to agriculture, commerce, the arts, and public life.

Promotions to the next class could be made after 5 years in the previous grade. There was a maximum limit of 500 Bronze Crosses, 100 Silver Crosses, and 15 Gold Crosses.

The obverse and reverse are identical and bear an inscription in characters that translates to “It is Worthy to Develop Knowledge,” and a French inscription that translates to “French Indochina.”

There may be versions of the Cross that vary in composition and manufacturer.
