The Madagascar Expedition Medal First Expedition (1883-1886) was created on July 31, 1886, and was awarded to all Officers, soldiers, sailors, and volunteers who took part in the campaign from 1883-1886.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic, Fatherland.”

The first examples have oval suspensions, while later examples have ball suspensions.
