History


This Medal was created in 1936 and was awarded to all civilians who were taken prisoner or hostage in the invaded departments of Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, and Moselle. It was also awarded posthumously to those who died as a result of injuries incurred during their internment.

Approximately 10400 Medals were awarded. Applications for the Medal were not accepted after February 1, 1958.

The reverse inscription translates to “Civilian Prisoners, Deportees, and Hostages of the Great War.”
