History

The Medal of Merit of Madagascar was created on May 14, 1901 by the Governor General of Madagascar, Joseph Gallieni. The French name translates directly as “Order of Merit,” however it did not possess the statute of a colonial order, and is therefore listed here as a Medal.

It was awarded to native citizens in recognition of contributions to agriculture, commerce, industry, art, and social welfare projects. In 1952 it was extended to non-natives who had lived in Madagascar for a minimum of 5 years, who were at least 40 years old, and who had rendered at least 20 years of meritorious service.

There are two versions of the medal which vary in inscription. The first version has a reverse inscription that translates to “Colony of Madagascar, Honour, Merit, Labour,” and the second version has a reverse inscription that translates to “Madagascar.” Both versions have an obverse inscription that translates to “French Republic.”

The Medal was discontinued in 1958 after the establishment of the Malagasy Republic. A new award, inspired by the Medal of Merit, called the “Order of Merit of Madagascar,” was created in 1960 by the new Republic. For more information about this Order see Order of Merit in the Orders of Madagascar.
