History

The Order of Arts and Letters was established on May 2, 1957. It is one of only four Orders that was not reorganized into the National Order of Merit in 1963.

It is conferred upon French citizens and foreigners who have made significant contributions to the arts in France and the world. Knights must be at least 30 years old. In order to be promoted to Officer or Commander, the candidate must spend a minimum of 5 years in the previous grade.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Order of Arts and Letters.”

There may be additional versions which vary in size, composition, or manufacturer.
