History

The Military Long Service Bar was founded by Grand Duke Ludwig III and was conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers and soldiers to denote seniority and long service.

Type I was discontinued following the formation of the German Empire in 1871. It was replaced with Type II, which was only conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers.

The Type I bars are quite rare, as they were only awarded for a short period of time.
