History

The Cross was established by Grand Duke Ludwig IV and was conferred upon individuals who rendered exceptional care of the sick and wounded during times of peace.

Candidates for the Cross were not limited to nursing professionals.

The Cross is similar in appearance to the Cross for Medical Workers (Militär-Sanitäts-Kreuz).

This grade of the Cross does not feature a number on the reverse, which indicates years of service.
