Physical Description


A smooth circular medal with a raised border, constructed of copper bronze. The obverse features a crown in the top half with a dot on each side, and the monogram ‘ELE’ in the lower half. The reverse features a narrow laurel wreath, tied by a ribbon at the bottom and closed at the top, with the inscription ‘KRIEGS-EHREN-ZEICHEN’ (war honour medal) in the centre. On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with narrow white side stripes.

History


The Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig as a successor of the Ehrenzeichen für Kriegsfürsorge. It was conferred upon individuals who demonstrated war merit, but were still not qualified to receive the General Honour Decoration or the Cross for Medical Workers.
