The Regent Ernst Commemorative Medal, 1897 was instituted by Count Ernst of Lippe-Biesterfeld to commemorate July 17, 1897, the day the count became head of the House of Lippe and moved into Schloss Lopshorn.

The award was conferred upon individuals who contributed to the celebration of July 17, in both an official and non-official capacity.
