The Bravery Medal was founded by Archbishop-Elector Friedrich Carl Joseph von Erthal and was conferred upon individuals who demonstrated outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy. It was conferred upon military personnel with the rank of Sergeant and below.

The medal was established after the Austrian General Count Clerfayt successfully ended the French occupation of the city of Mainz on 25 October, 1795.
