History

The Civil Merit Medal was originally instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was conferred for meritorious civil service.

In 1816, the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin became a Grand Duchy and the medal was remodeled to reflect the newly acquired grandeur of the state.

The Type II medals were wearable.
