History

The Civil Merit Medal was originally instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz in 1798, and was conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the Grand Duke and the state. It was also conferred to reward outstanding accomplishments in the fields of art, science, and industry.

After Mecklenburg-Schwerin became a Grand Duchy in 1816, the design of the original medal from 1798 was altered to reflect the newly acquired grandeur of the state.

The Type III medals were issued under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II and feature his portrait on the obverse.

Men wore the medal as a neck decoration and women wore the medal on a bow ribbon.
