History

The Civil Merit Medal was originally instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz in 1798, and was conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the Grand Duke and the state.

The Type V medals were instituted on March 19, 1885 and feature the portrait of Friedrich Franz III.

The medal for civil personnel features a wide pendant suspension and a plain light blue ribbon.

The medal for military personnel features a ring suspension and a plain light blue ribbon.

When the medal was conferred upon women, it was worn on a bow ribbon.

The medal for civilians and military personnel was awarded on a purple, blue, and yellow ribbon, when it was conferred upon individuals for honorable deeds. The addition of the ribbon may result in a slight price variation.
