The Long Service Cross was originally instituted by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich on 30 April, 1841, and was conferred upon military personnel to reward long and faithful service.

The Cross for 20 Years was conferred upon NCOs (non-commissioned officers) and EMs (Enlisted Men).
