The Long Service Cross was originally instituted by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich on 30 April, 1841, and was conferred upon military personnel to reward long and faithful service.
The Type II Crosses were renewed by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II on November 11, 1868, and required a different number of service years to receive an Award.
The I Class Cross for 9 Years was conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men.
