History

The Medal for Art and Science was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was conferred in recognition of outstanding achievements in the areas of the art and science.

The gold medal was worn from around the neck. Women wore the medal on a bow ribbon.

The Type II medals feature a right-facing portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz.
