History

The Military Merit Cross was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II and was conferred upon military personnel, regardless of rank, for demonstrating bravery during specific military campaigns and wars.

The Type VI crosses were conferred to reward meritorious service rendered during the Russo-Turkish War.

Very few Type VI crosses were awarded to citizens of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, as relatively few participated in the Russo-Turkish War. However, there are still some examples of crosses that were awarded to Mecklenburg military observers.
