History

The Military Merit Cross was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II and was conferred upon military personnel, regardless of rank, for demonstrating bravery during specific military campaigns and wars.

The Type VIII cross was conferred to reward meritorious service rendered during various colonial campaigns and conflicts between the years 1900 and 1910, such as the Herero Wars.

The cross does not feature an obverse date.
