History

The Cross of Merit for Women and Girls was founded by King Wilhelm II at the behest of his wife, Empress Auguste Victoria, and it was created in recognition of women who rendered meritorious service in the care of wounded soldiers throughout the war against France.

The medal was founded in recognition of women's willingness to sacrifice for the welfare of the soldiers and the country.

The recipients were selected by Empress Augusta and awarded by the Emperor.
