Physical Description and Item Details


(Verdienstkreuz für Frauen und Jungfrauen). Instituted on March 22, 1871. (Issued 1871). A cross pattee of multi-piece construction with a black onyx core decorated with a red and white enameled Geneva cross, the reverse dated “1870/71”, with a crown, and inscribed “AW” for “Wilhelm and Augusta”, on a double loop for suspension from its period original ladies ribbon, marked “W” for “Wagner & Sohn, Berlin” on the top edge of the frame, measuring 33.09 mm (w) x 33.07 mm (h), weighing 15.8 grams, in overall extremely fine condition.

History


This decoration was founded by King Wilhelm II at the behest of his wife, Empress Auguste Victoria, and it was created in recognition of women who rendered meritorious service in the care of wounded soldiers throughout the war against France.

The medal was founded in recognition of women's willingness to sacrifice for the welfare of the soldiers and the country.

The recipients were selected by Empress Augusta and awarded by the Kaiser.
