History

The King Wilhelm Honour Medal was founded by King Wilhelm II to commemorate the 100th birthday of his grandfather, Emperor Wilhelm I. It was also known as the "Centenary Medal" and "Commemorative Medal for the Most Blessed Emperor and King Wilhelm I, the Great".

The medal was conferred upon all active members of the military, state and university officials, veterans of the Unification Wars (First Schleswig War, Second Schleswig War, Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War), and female members of the Order of Louise.

The medal was minted in Berlin, and was not allowed to be worn prior to the certificate being presented. Recipients were not required to return the medal, and lost ones could be replenished while there was still existing stock.

In 1908, there were approximately 31,200 living recipients. This medal is one of the most common Prussian awards.
