History

The Military Merit Cross was founded by King Wilhelm I and it was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men in recognition of acts of special merit and repeated bravery.

This decoration was known as the "Pour le Mérite" for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men.

The cross is also known as the Golden Military Merit Cross, in order to avoid confusing it with the Military Decoration 1st Class, a lesser Prussian decoration.
