The Medal for 50 Years of Reign was instituted by Duke Ernst I to commemorate his 50th ruling year. The Medal was only conferred on August 3, 1903, the day of its institution, and it was awarded to members of the ducal court, civil servants, the Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the 8. Thüringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 153, and others who were close to the court.
