History

The Military Long Service Decoration was instituted by Duke Joseph Friedrich Ernst on January 1, 1836. The decoration was conferred upon military personnel who rendered numerous years of irreproachable service. The award consisted of a cross for officers and a series of bars for Sergeants, non-commissioned officers, army musicians, and enlisted ranks.

When service years were calculated, war years counted for double and holiday time counted for half.

The Type I decorations feature the monogram of Duke Joseph Friedrich Ernst.

The III Class Bar for 6 Years was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted ranks.
