Physical Description


A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of an older Grand Duke Carl Alexander with the circular inscription ‘CARL ALEXANDER GROSSHERZOG VON SACHSEN’. Below the neck is the stamp cutter’s signature ‘HELFRICHT F.’. On the upper right rim, next to the eyelet is the silver content mark ‘SILBER 0,990’. The reverse features the crowned intertwined monogram ‘CA’. On a loop for suspension, on a black ribbon with a yellow inner and green outer border on each side.

History


The Appreciation Medal was founded by Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxony on August 25, 1892. It was founded shortly after Carl Alexander had instituted his version of the Merit Medal, to honour commendable achievements and loyal services that were not quite enough for the Merit Medal.
The majority of recipients were foreigners.
