History

The Medal for Faithful War Service was founded by Grand Duke Carl August, and it was conferred upon the military personnel that rendered exemplary and brave service in the 1809 campaigns.

The medal was only awarded to the recipients after a commission of senior ranking military officers evaluated the wartime actions under review and deemed them appropriate to receive the medal.

The medal was not hereditary, it was returned after the recipient's death.
