This medal was originally instituted by King Albert and it was conferred upon labourers and servants in recognition of long and faithful service.
The Type I and Type II medals were not wearable. The first wearable version of the medal was introduced in 1894 (Type III).
On August 10, 1894 King Albert amended the medal. The Type III, Type IV, and Type V medals were awarded to labourers and servants that had begun serving at the age of 25, and had provided 30 years of faithful and continuous service within their employment.
