The Anna-Luise Merit Medal was instituted on February 19, 1918, by Prince Günther of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Sondershausen on the birthday of his wife, Princess Anna-Luise. The Medal was conferred upon women who rendered exceptional patriotic service during the First World War. Women were awarded for services such as caring for wounded soldiers and veterans.
It was originally planned that the award would consist of two classes, but it was later decided that it would be comprised of a single class.
The Silver Medal was awarded 98 times to female citizens of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
