Physical Description

A quatrefoil, constructed of silver gilt and enamel. The quatrefoil is golden with a green enamelled pearled line on the edge, and with a green enamelled laurel wreath above it, attached via eyelet and loop. In the corners of the quatrefoil are golden flames. The centre features the goddess Pallas Athena with a spear in her hand and an owl on her shoulder. In the left, right, and bottom corners, which are cut out, is the inscription ‘ARTI ET LITTERIS’ (‘for art and science’) in white enamel. At the bottom right is the artist’s signature ‘LC’. The reverse is similar, except that the centre features the ducal coat of arms. There is no enamel on the reverse. On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with green leaves as side stripes.

History

The Decoration for Art and Science was instituted on August 21, 1912 by Prince Günther of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Sondershausen. The award was conferred upon individuals who distinguished themselves in the field of art of science.

The award was conferred upon five recipients. The decoration was worn from around the neck.
