On December 7, 1889, Prince Karl Günther created three merit awards for accomplishments in a variety of different fields. The awards included a Service Medal for Art and Science, a Service Medal for Commercial and Industrial Merit, and a Service Medal for Agriculture. The awards were conferred upon citizens who were incredibly accomplished in one of the aforementioned fields.
