The War Merit Medal was founded in 1815 by Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. The Medal was conferred upon the military personnel of the Schwarzburg contingent who rendered service between 1814 and 1815 in the Napoleonic Wars.

The stamp was designed by Daniel Loos, Berlin. The medal was conferred upon 712 recipients.
