History

The SA (Sturmabteilung, storm detachment) was established in 1921 as a paramilitary protection squad of the NSDAP. The members of the SA were tasked with protecting party leaders at political rallies and meetings from the paramilitary forces of the opposing political factions. The SA was first utilised on November 4, 1921 at a meeting held in Munich’s "Hofbräuhaus" beer hall. The organisation was banned after the failed putsch in 1923 and was reactivated in February 1925.

SA-Feldjäger Corps Gorget was worn by every member of the unit, an auxiliary police force that existed from 1933 until 1935. At its peak, the organisation had around 700 members. There were eight Feldjäger-Abteilungen (detachments) throughout Germany, including I Königsberg, II Stetten, IIIa Breslau, IIIb Berlin, IV Magdeburg, V Frankfurt a.M., VIa Hanover, and VIb Düsseldorf.

The obverse of the kidney-shaped gorget features an early Prussian State Police emblem, flanked by numerals which designated the wearer’s unit (ex: A VIa = Abteilung Hanover). The wearer’s serial number is affixed below the emblem. In each of the upper corners, there is a swastika. The breastplate is matte silvered metal and the attached insignia is gilded. The reverse of the gorget is backed with cloth or leather and it features a metal tang. The metal tang was inserted through a button in the wearer’s tunic. If the gorget features a maker’s mark, it will be stamped on the metal tang. The gorget chain is attached to loops that are affixed to the upper corners of the reverse.
