History

The 20. Waffen-Grenadier-Division (Estnische Nr. 1) was raised in 1944 and was primarily composed of the Estonian personnel of the ‘Wiking’ Division. The division originally included the 42nd, 43rd, 45th, and 46th SS Freiwilligen Grenadier Regiments, but in November of 1944, it was reduced to the 45th, 46th, 47th, and auxiliary units.

Foreign SS volunteers were not permitted to wear SS runes and instead, they were issued collar tabs that were unique to their division. The first pattern of the collar tab features a mailed arm holding a sword and the letter “E”. The second pattern was introduced by the Waffen-SS in June of 1944 and featured a sword over a large "E". This pattern was unpopular among Estonian personnel.

The collar tab for Officers may feature silver piping.
