History

Members of mountain units were issued short, leather lace-up ankle boots that were designed for the rugged terrain and cold weather conditions. The heels and soles of the boot were heavily studded and the edges reinforced with iron cleats. The wearer would tuck their trousers into the tops of the boots and cover the area with either puttees or gaiters.
