History

Officers of the Waffen-SS had the option of purchasing a field-grey leather overcoat. The coat was extremely costly and many junior Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers could not afford it.

The leather overcoat is similar in design to the field-grey overcoat; it is doubled breasted, has two rows of six grey buttons, and two flapped lower pockets. The reverse of the coat has a vertical vent from the hemline to the waist and features a half belt with two buttons. The coat is generally designed to have a button-in lining for additional warmth. The base lining of the coat may be produced from materials such as rayon.

The coat was supposed to align with official regulations, although numerous variants in terms of cut, colour, pockets, and use of insignia can be encountered. Only shoulder straps were allowed to be worn on the leather overcoat, but many Officers flouted this regulation.
