The German Legion was established on August 25, 1919 and was subject to the General Command of the 6th Reserve Corps. On October 6, the legion joined the West Russian Volunteer Army, made up of German and Russian men, the latter were loyal to the Russian Empire and enemies of the Bolsheviks.
The award was instituted in early 1920. It was worn on the left breast. It was silvered and hollow-stamped and presents a vertically oval form with a large superimposed square on which is a stylised moose head facing to the viewer's right, and around it the inscription "DEUTSCHE" (top) "LEGION" (bottom) "KURLAND" (left) "1919" (right). The oval top features oak leaves, the bottom spruce twigs.
