The original name of the award is Bewährungsabeichen des Freikorps Lützow.

History

The Freikorps Lützow Badge was instituted at an unknown date, however, it was before the unit was absorbed into the Provisional Army of the Weimar Republic on December 1, 1919. Presumably, it was instituted by the unit's commander, Major von Lützow. The badge was made by Godet & Sohn, Berlin.

The badge was awarded to all members of the Freikorps who had served with it for at least six months. It is vertically oval and features an enclosing laurel wreath with a crown on top, a stylised letter "L" below it, a postal bugle in the centre, and a guard star at the bottom. Crown, star, and laurel wreath are gilt while the rest of the badge is silvered.

Multiple variants exist. Some badges were made of brass while others were made of zinc. A cut-out version is also known to exist.

It is unknown how many badges were manufactured, however, it was more than 500, since a badge with the registration number "520" is known to exist.
