This Decoration is a continuation of the Corvin Decoration for Art and Science which was originally instituted in 1930. It was re-instituted on August 14, 2001, by Prime Minister Orbán Viktor of Hungary.

The Hungarian name for the decoration is "Magyar Corvin-Lánc".

The Decoration is awarded to recognize extraordinary merit and service within the arts, sciences, and education.
