This Medal was instituted alongside the Red Cross Cross of Merit by royal decree in 1914. It is awarded in recognition of meritorious service rendered through or to the Dutch Red Cross.

There are three versions of the medal that differ in inscription. The first and third versions feature a reverse inscription that translates to "Dutch Red Cross," but they differ in spelling. The second version features a reverse inscription that translates to "For Loyalty and Devotion."
