History

The Eleven Cities Cross was established by the Royal Society of the Frisian Eleven Cities in 1909. It was officially designated a royal award in 2012 and was permitted for wear on military uniforms in 2013.

It is awarded in recognition of the completion of the Elfstedentocht - a historic long-distance speed skating race that tours the eleven cities of Friesland.

The Silver Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "The Eleven Frisian Cities."
