This Medal was established in commemoration of May 17th in Noway, which is now known as the national holiday, Norwegian Constitution day.

Civilians were able to purchase the medal at the May 17th celebrations.

Some sources claim that the Medal was initially manufactured in Oslo in 1881, in commemoration of unveiling of Henrik Wergeland's statue.

This Medal may also be known as they "First War Constitution Medal" or the "1920 Fatherland Medal".

Throughout the years there have been many variations in the composition, inscriptions, size and, obverse and reverse designs of the medals. Due to this reason, there may be price differences associated with each version.
