Awarded by the Chief of Defence, this medal was conferred upon foreign and Norwegian military personnel who during battle operations or other perilous operations distinguished themselves with courage and commendable actions exceeding standard requirements.
This Medal could only be conferred upon the same recipient once. If an individual distinguished themselves an additional time, a sword shape clasp was added on the ribbon. The maximum number of sword clasps that could have been conferred to an individual is three.
The reverse of the medal was engraved with the recipients name.
This Medal may have been conferred posthumously.
In 2010, this Medal was abolished, and following 2014, the medal was no longer permitted to be worn on uniform.
